Our Mission

At Refugio Animal Sanctuary, we believe every animal deserves to know what it feels like to be safe, loved, and protected.

Located in Fresno, California, Refugio Animal Sanctuary was created to provide refuge and a second chance to animals who have been abandoned, neglected, mistreated, or rescued from dangerous situations. Many of the animals we hope to help have experienced circumstances no animal should ever have to endure.

At Refugio, their story can begin again.

Our goal is to provide every animal in our care with nutritious food, veterinary treatment, a safe and comfortable environment, enrichment, and—just as importantly—the patience, compassion, and affection they need to heal and learn to trust again.

One of our biggest projects is transforming an existing barn on our Fresno property into safe, comfortable kennels and dedicated spaces for rescued animals.

Funds raised will help us complete the improvements necessary to turn this barn into a true sanctuary—a place where animals can recover, feel secure, receive the care they need, and wait for the family that will finally call them their own.

Every kennel we complete means another animal we can say “yes” to.

Every donation—large or small—brings us one step closer to opening those doors and giving an animal in need a safe place to land.

A Sanctuary in the Truest Sense

Our mission goes beyond rescue. We are committed to advocating for animal welfare, promoting responsible pet ownership and adoption, and creating a community where vulnerable animals are treated with compassion and dignity.

At Refugio, animals will never be euthanized for convenience, lack of space, age, or simply because they have been waiting too long for a home. Euthanasia will only be considered when an animal is suffering and there is no reasonable hope for recovery or an acceptable quality of life.

For some animals, Refugio will be a temporary safe place while they heal and wait for their forever family.

For others—especially those who are older, medically fragile, or difficult to place—

Refugio will be their forever home.

You Can Help Build Their Second Chance

Every rescue begins when someone decides:

Your support can help us transform our barn into kennels, provide veterinary care, purchase food and supplies, create safe spaces for the animals, and provide the ongoing care each animal deserves.

You don’t have to make a large donation to make a difference. When a community comes together, $10, $25, $50, donated materials, volunteer hours, and business sponsorships can become kennels, medical care, full bowls, warm beds, and second chances.
